5 Things to do in Reno in August

Updated: Feb 16, 2019

I can’t believe August is already here! Where has the year gone?! And summer? Ah! Time is going too fast. This month not only marks the end of summer, it also is my last month of being 24. I’m the big 2-5 on August 31st, which is beyond weird. But, it’s my birthday month – which means I need fun things to do!

Read this blog to learn about 5 big events happening in Reno in August 2016!

1. Hot August Nights

When: August 2 – 7

Where: All the major casinos & Downtown Reno

During the first week of August every year Reno travels back in time while hot rods and gorgeous cars cruise down our streets. 2016 marks Hot August Nights 30th Anniversary, so I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of amazing events going on. Every year I normally go see them at the Peppermill or the Atlantis. You can find live music, fair food (yay for funnel cakes), and cars you can only dream of driving.

2. Drinking Events

Where: Downtown Reno

As always, there are the monthly crawls and walks in Downtown Reno. This month, we have the Pirate Crawl, Wine Walk, and the Beer Crawl. With the introduction of Pokémon Go last month, we can be sure that many crawlers will have their phones out this month, so make sure to keep an eye out when you’re driving! As always, be safe, be responsible, and have fun!

Reno Pirate Crawl – 8/13

Reno Wine Walk – 8/20

Monthly Reno Beer Crawl – 8/27

3. Burning Man

When: August 28 – September 5

Where: Black Rock Desert

So, I’m not exactly a burner and I don’t wish to become one. But, I love Burning Man Season. Since Reno isn’t too far from the Black Rock Desert the few days leading up to Burning Man are perfect for people watching. Many burners stop by to get their last cases of water, presenting the perfect opportunity to see the crazy cars and art before it takes off.

If you missed the opportunity to buy your ticket online this year, no fear, there are tickets being sold on Craig’s List for upwards of $800!!! But if you’re going, be safe and stay hydrated!

4. Rib Cook Off

When: August 21 – September 5

Where: Victorian Square in Sparks

YUM! Every year the best of the best gather to sell their ribs and bbq sauce at the annual Nugget Rib Cook-Off. I’m not even that big of a rib fan, but I get stoked on this event. I've been going with friends every year since I was able to drive. (See that pic on the right? That's from my senior year of high school!) Especially the stand that sells hush-puppies (anyone remember which one that is?). And if you're not wanting ribs, there are other options. One of my favorite things is lemonade from Goody's Lemonade, it's the best drink ever. It’s always crazy crowded, but it’s always super fun! Get hungry, and I’ll see you there!

5. My Birthday

When: August 31

Where: Not so sure yet.

Of course, I will be at Ichibans for my birthday dinner – as always. But, other than that I don’t know what I’ll be doing this year. I feel like 25 is a big deal, so I would like to do something super fun! Anyone have any suggestions?

Have a super great August! And if you’re heading back to school at the end of the month, make sure to live up the last few weeks of break while you can!
