Pod 39 Hotel Review

Updated: Feb 16, 2019

I went to NYC for four days, three nights, Thursday - Sunday. Perfect weekend getaway trip. We stayed at this nice, simple hotel in Hell’s Kitchen area. I couldn’t tell you the name, it was just a basic hotel nothing fancy.

But then my nightmare of being stuck on the tarmac at JFK for four hours happened. Then I sat in the airport until midnight when they finally let us know that our flight had been cancelled. And my mom and I called 40+ hotels near the airport to learn that all were booked. And of course, we couldn’t get a flight out of Reno for two more days.

But… everything happens for a reason. My mom’s sister, Sheri, who had been traveling with us was supposed to leave on Sunday, too. But she opted to stay one more day and leave on Monday. And she graciously let us come crash in her hotel room. So at 12:30 am my mom and I left JFK and hopped on the Subway to go back into the city.

I think we got to Sheri’s hotel, Pod 39, at 3:30 am. But, we had a spot to sleep – even if my spot was on the floor – and we were safe. No lie, that night was one of the most stressful nights of my life. But my mom and I got through it and everything was fine. I did have to take two extra days of PTO, but it’s all good. And! Sheri was able to add one extra night to her stay so we stayed in Pod 39 on Monday night, too.

Pod 39 is not like other hotels. Which is sort of what I wanted to talk about in this post. So let’s dive in!

Single Room at the Pod 39 Hotel

Pod 39 is a budget-friendly hotel that is overly hip and tech-savy. Each room has a tv, and great free wifi. Sheri booked the Single Pod, which I now see on their site has a max occupancy of one person, not three… makes me wonder if I should even be writing this. But, it was an emergency so I think it’s fine.

Tiny right? But it really wasn’t that big of a deal. Especially since we didn’t end up spending that might time in there. The fact that it had a shower, toilet, and a bed is all we really needed.

Because I titled this blog “Pod 39 Hotel Review” I will go ahead and give it a 5 Star Review. It was our heaven when we needed it most. Thank goodness for this place. And even if you aren’t a solo traveler, they have really inexpensive options for travelers. Especially for NYC.

The Pod 39 Rooftop Bar

The coolest thing about Pod 39 is the rooftop bar. It’s seriously so cool! Brick walls on the outside, and colorful décor and throws on the inside. On Tuesday we had some time to kill before we needed to head to the airport, and we also had a bottle of wine that wasn’t finished. So we went to the bar upstairs, which was empty, and took pictures and drank wine. It was seriously so cool. And yes, a big goal of this blog post was to show off these awesome photos we took:

Life lesson – not everything goes according to plan when you travel. We definitely thought we were going to be home on Sunday night, not stuck in New York City for two extra days. My mom and I also never thought we’d be sharing a twin size bed together, but you know, it happens.
